About
The Italian Society of Natural Medicine (SIMN) was founded in December 2003 with the aim to promote herbal medicine as a science based on evidence, according to the principle of medicine based on scientific evidence. The project was created to meet the needs for health and wellness growing in the population. SIMN wants to provide an adequate response to a question of quality of life that requires new rigor, more reassurance and above all, a most authoritative scientific certainty. Repositioning the man at the center, with its primary interests, with its demands and its natural needs of psycho-physical wellness is the mission that the project should be.
The basis upon which the whole project of the Italian Society of Natural Medicine (SIMN) is the integration of herbal medicine and correct nutrition.
Project Goals
To protect public health through information and education initiatives aimed at:
- Prevent damage arising from misuse and uncontrolled of the so-called “natural products”.
- Wide sharing of health professionals (doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians) knowledge about the real pharmacological profile, clinical and toxicological studies of so-called “natural products”.
- Spread at the population level a sufficient sensitivity to a correct approach to “natural product” as a source of benefits but also potentially serious risks to choose and assume under the of medical doctors and / or pharmacists.
- Improve nutrition in function of the so-called “therapeutic value” of foods, disseminating the concept of power nutriceuticals.
- Undertake research in both the agricultural and the pharmaceutical sector, to aim an improvement in the knowledges about medicinal plants, an improved understanding of the use of “natural” products and to better define the options for the optimal use of natural products.
As a consequence the project has a strong social connotation, as it aims to disseminate both the health professionals and the public a right approach to products based on extracts of medicinal plants and a proper diet, stressing the value of some health-conscious foods.
Target.
- Physicians (control and continuous education of patients, guide to the proper use of “natural products”, recognition and reporting of adverse reactions related to their use, careful selection of products with attention to their quality criteria).
- Pharmacists (dispensing of controlled products in terms of quality, accurate information to those that require no prescription, guide the proper use of “natural products”).
- Veterinary medicine (appropriate choice of products with attention to their criteria of quality, recognition and reporting of adverse reactions arising from their use).
- Population (controlled use of “natural” products, informed choice of products with attention to
their criteria of quality).
The SIMN aims to promote scientific research in the field of herbal medicine in all its sectors, namely phytochemical, pharmacological, clinical and toxicological studies with the aim of enhancing scientific knowledge on medicinal plants with emphasis on clinical and toxicological areas, where most poor are reliable scientific information available today. In this case must be sought collaborations with public research institutions and facilities and / or individuals, in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry and the phytotherapic industry. Some research projects are in an advanced state of preparation in partnership with several universities, while some are already at the stage of operational implementation.
