CONSTIPATION: is almost always a functional disorder, but sometimes it can be caused by serious illnesses such as cancer of the bowel. You can talk about constipation true when the subject is not evacuating at least 3 days, otherwise it is only a disorder of the hive. The main causes are represented by diets too low in fiber, too sedentary life, certain drugs, severe depletion of intestinal bacterial flora, excessive size of the colon and psychological factors. The symptoms are usually atypical and very soft, consisting of a sense of bloating sometimes accompanied by mild, diffuse abdominal pain and digestive problems. Constipation usually responds well to a proper diet rich in fiber, to an increase of physical exercise and to the ingestion of a good quantity of fluids.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME: (synonym spastic colitis) is caused by spasmodic contractions of the intestinal smooth muscle, usually in response to stress and poor nutrition. Typical symptoms include recurrent and migrant abdominal pain, bloating and sometimes diarrhoea or alternating constipation and diarrhoea. More rarely it may be associated with constipation. Typically these abdominal pains last for a few minutes and then disappear almost completely, but they recur several times during the day. The latest research indicates that the cause may be an inflammatory bowel disease.

Useful plants: Curcuma longa (turmeric), Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel), Melissa Melissa (lemon balm), Passiflora incarnata (Passion flower), Pimpinella anisum (aniseed), Tilia tomentosa (Linden).
