ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION (synonymous with high blood pressure): it consists in increasing blood pressure. The maximum pressure is called systolic and the minimum pressure diastolic. It may be predominantly systolic hypertension (increase of the maximum pressure), diastolic hypertension (increase of the the minimum pressure) or systodiastolic hypertension (increase of both). In healthy systolic blood pressure should not exceed 140 mm / Hg and diastolic blood pressure 90 mm / Hg. Very often the causes of hypertension remain unknown, and this is called essential hypertension. It is a very dangerous disease in itself and even more so when associated with diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia, as it damages the blood vessels and promotes the development of atherosclerosis (see Atherosclerosis). Typical symptoms include headache, particularly at the top of the head, dizziness, appearance of small spots in the visual field and general malaise.
